Bulb Gardening Success

A bulb garden is a great way to let your creativity shine and enjoy beautiful flowers throughout the garden season. Beginning gardeners; however, sometimes find bulb gardens to be somewhat difficult to grow. With a few pointers in the right direction; however, it won’t be long before you are enjoying the fragrant fruits of your efforts.

First, recognize that many bulb plants can be very picky about where they live. Some bulbs do well in certain zones and will not thrive at all in others. Therefore, it is important to understand which zone you live in and select only those bulb plants that are rated to do well in that zone. Make sure you never plant bulbs in colder climates than they are zoned for because you will surely meet with disaster. Follow the planting zones and you and your bulbs will be much happier.

Be aware that bulb plants will either flower in the spring or the fall. If you want your bulbs to flower in the spring they will need to be planted in the fall. Likewise, for bulbs that flower in the summer they will need to be planted in the spring. Of course, there is an exception to almost every rule and this is no different. Some plants, such as lilies, can be planted in either season and bloom in fall or summer. Make sure you know exactly which type of bulb you’re working with and plant accordingly. If you want long lasting color all the way from summer through fall be sure to plant a variety of bulbs that bloom consecutively.

Remember that bulb plants need ready access to water. This may mean being selective about where you plant your bulbs if you live in an area where it is difficult to access water. In addition, your selection of location will also need to depend on the sun needs of the plants you choose. Some bulb plants require a lot of sun while others need shade. Make sure you know the needs of your plants and choose locations accordingly.

When planting your bulbs, make sure you place them in the ground with the “pointy” side sticking up.

Don’t forget to mulch your plants. This will help to control weeds and keep your plants moist.

Finally, make sure you know which of your bulb plants will need to be taken out of the ground before the cooler temperatures hit to survive the winter.
