Monthly Garden Guide


One of the most confusing aspects of gardening for many new gardeners is understanding what needs to be done in the garden and when the appropriate time is to tackle that particular task. In some cases, if you live in area that does not experience all four seasons, you may need to adjust your gardening schedule accordingly; however, below you will find information that will help you understand what should be done in the garden on a month by month basis if you live in a full four season region.

January
Time to start planning the garden for next season. Begin to browse plant and seed catalogs

February
Make sure you are keeping an eye on your houseplants and ensuring that they are receiving enough humidity.
Tim to cut the branches of flowering shrubs.

March
Tim to prune non stone fruit trees as well as raspberries and grapes. Begin an all purpose spray maintenance program.

Time to plant vegetables that are slow growers such as celery, onions, parsley, leeks, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, eggplant and cabbage.

Remove mulch from rose bushes.

Plant peas as long as you have no snow.

April
Move cool season crops into the garden
Plant asparagus
Remove mulch from flowers

May
After last frost, plant warm crops
Start seeds for squash and melons
Pinch perennials and annuals. This will help them to fill in and produce even more blooms.
Prune stone fruits such as peach, plum, almond, cherry, nectarine
Prune evergreens when the new growth indicates a darker green
Stake tall perennials

June
Prune flowers shrubs-only after flowers have begun to fade
Continue pinching flowers
Remove fading leaves from spring plants
Check undersides of rose leaves-be on the lookout for slugs
Divide and transplant perennials
Move houseplants indoors

July
Stop pinching flowers
Water newly planted plants as necessary
Start fall seed crops for cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli

August
Plant seeds for fall peas
Do cuttings for new plants
Gather herbs for drying

September
Plants seeds for fall spinach
Plant spring flower bulbs

October
Plant shallots and garlic
Have soil tested
Clean up debris in garden. Make sure you remove all fallen fruit and vegetable plants
Remove any dead annuals
Cutback perennials. This will prevent pests from wintering
Rake and compost

November
Cover exposed garden soil with mulch
Wrap fruit tree trunks
Mulch roses

December
Rotate houseplants so they receive equivalent amounts of light
Harvest root crops, if able
