Transplanting Success

Transplanting your plants can be a great way to re-energize your garden; however, there are several tips you should keep in mind in order to pull off this delicate process with success.

First, try to make sure that you undertake a transplanting on a day when the weather is cool, cloudy and humid. Technically, you can transplant at any time but this is the best weather to handle the job.
Plan ahead of when you are going to transplant by a day or so. This will allow you to soak the ground around the plant so that you can dig in deeply and make sure you get all thee roots without disturbing any or running the risk of damaging the plant when you dig it up.

Before you do anything else, prepare the new hole first. Make sure you do this before you dig up the plant. This is important so that the roots won’t dry out while you are preparing the new hole. Remember to make it wider and deeper than you might initially think it would need to be. A general rule of thumb is to plan for the hole to big 1 foot larger than the spread of the roots of the original plant if you are transplanting trees and six inches or so if you are transplanting shrubs.

Always remove any debris from the hole and mix in some plant food to keep the soil rich. Before you prepare to move the plant, place some water in the hole and allow it to soak well.

When digging up the plant, make sure you keep the root system complete in the dirt ball and keep those roots moist. Do not allow them to dry out. You can do this by covering them with a wet sack or even by soaking them in a pail of water until you are ready to put them in the ground.

Before you put the plant in the ground make sure that you have a layer of good soil at the bottom of the soil. This will allow the plant to grow to the same depth. Next, begin filling in around the root ball. You will need to rock the plant very carefully and gently to settle it into place. This will help the soil to bind with the roots.

It’s also a good idea to use some transplanting fertilizer solutions, which can help your plant to recover from the shock much sooner and provide somewhat of a booster. It is natural for plants to have a set back for a little bit of time but they should recover soon enough.

Make sure you provide plenty of water but not so much that the soil become soggy. On the first day that you transplant it’s also a good idea to give the foliage a little sprinkle of water as well. You can also lay down a little mulching, which will help the plant to conserve water.

Finally, don’t forget to provide some light feeding during the first season after you transplant.
